YouTube Surpasses Disney: How AI is Powering the Future of Content

On its 20th anniversary, YouTube has officially outpaced Disney in U.S. media dominance. With 2.7 billion users and 13.4% of national viewership in July 2025 (compared to Disney’s 9.4%), YouTube is proving it’s more than just a video platform—it’s the future of entertainment.

AI at the Core of Growth

At the Made on YouTube event, CEO Neal Mohan emphasized that AI is a tool for creators, not a replacement. Over 30 new AI-powered features were introduced, including:

  • Auto-edited rough cuts from raw clips

  • Speech-to-song conversions

  • Shopping link integration inside videos

  • AI-generated clips for podcasts

These tools are designed to save time, boost creativity, and help creators scale faster.

A New Career Standard

In just four years, YouTube has paid out over $100 billion to creators. Big names like Dua Lipa, Smosh, and Mark Rober show how digital creators now rival Hollywood in influence. For many, YouTube isn’t just a platform—it’s a sustainable career path.

Outpacing Disney

With annual revenue on track to surpass Disney’s $60B, YouTube has become the new powerhouse of media. Backed by Alphabet’s AI research, its growth is unmatched in the entertainment world.

The Bigger Shift

AI is empowering creators, not replacing them. Mohan called AI the “biggest unlock in creative history”, highlighting how it helps creators focus on storytelling and building real connections.
